Officially extinct in 1936, the Tasmanian tiger keeps being reported — hundreds of sightings, no confirmed proof of survival.
This entry is unlike any other in the atlas: the thylacine unquestionably existed. The striped, dog-shaped marsupial — the largest carnivorous marsupial of modern times — roamed Tasmania into the twentieth century, and museums hold its skeletons, skins and even zoo footage. Persecuted as a sheep-killer (the Tasmanian government paid out more than two thousand bounties between 1888 and 1909) and squeezed by habitat loss and possibly disease, it collapsed: the last wild animal was shot in 1930, and the last captive died at Hobart's Beaumaris Zoo on September 7, 1936. The 'cryptid', then, is not the animal but its conjectured survival beyond that date.
The sightings never stopped. More than a thousand post-1936 reports have been logged in Tasmania: striped shapes crossing night roads, the stiff, distinctive gait, the thick tail carried low. The most cited is that of Hans Naarding, a national parks officer who in 1982 said he studied a thylacine by torchlight for several minutes in the island's northwest — testimony considered weighty enough to trigger a two-year government search, which found nothing.
The physical evidence, however, keeps failing under scrutiny. The 1973 film shot by the Doyle family, camera-trap stills, recent phone videos: analysis after analysis has returned dogs, mangy foxes (on the mainland), pademelons or heavily marked wallabies — or images simply too poor to decide. No hair, scat or carcass attributable to a post-1936 thylacine has ever survived testing. On mainland Australia, where the species vanished around three thousand years ago, the claims are weaker still.
The plausibility question has been asked in earnest by science. In 2023 Barry Brook's team at the University of Tasmania modelled 1,237 reports from 1910 onward, weighting each for credibility: their study in Science of the Total Environment concluded that true extinction most likely came in the 1980s or 1990s — decades after 1936 — with a small but non-zero chance of persistence into the early 2000s in the island's rugged southwest. In other words, witnesses of the 1940s-1970s may well have seen living thylacines; today's witnesses almost certainly do not.
No case better illustrates the grey zone between zoology and cryptozoology: a real species, an extinction perhaps later than the textbook date, and a stream of modern sightings that collective hope is probably sufficient to sustain. Gene-technology 'de-extinction' projects keep the animal in the headlines — an entirely separate question from its natural survival.

- Because the alleged survival of an officially extinct species is a classic cryptozoological subject, the 'relict animal'. The thylacine itself is fully documented by science — what is in question is its presence after 1936.
- What about the recent photos and videos of thylacines?
- None has withstood expert review: the images are blurred, distant, or show animals identifiable as dogs, pademelons or wallabies. Specialists are waiting for something testable — a carcass, DNA — and it has never come.
