Ropen

Aliases: Duwas · Indava / Territory: Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée

A glowing “living pterosaur” of Papua New Guinea pushed by creationist expeditions; frigatebirds and bats explain most of it.

The ropen, as its promoters describe it, is a large nocturnal flyer of Umboi Island and the Papua New Guinea coast: a pterosaur outline, a long tail ending in a diamond vane, a bony head crest, and — the signature trait — a bioluminescent glow flashing briefly over ridgelines and reefs at night. Umboi villagers do speak of night lights and flying beings in their traditions; it is the assembly of those elements into a “living pterosaur” that is an imported construction.

One thing must be said up front: this file is carried almost entirely by young-Earth creationist expeditions. From 1994 onward, Carl Baugh, then Paul Nation, Jonathan Whitcomb, David Woetzel and a few others took turns on Umboi with a declared goal — find a living pterosaur in order, as they believe, to refute evolution and geological time. Their books and websites generated nearly all ropen literature, including the retroactive promotion of a 1944 account: US serviceman Duane Hodgkinson's description of an enormous flying animal near Finschhafen, collected and relabelled a “pterosaur” sixty years later by these same investigators. The underlying misunderstanding deserves naming: even a genuine relict pterosaur would not refute evolution — the coelacanth never did.

Strip away the ideological frame and what remains is testimony about flying silhouettes and lights. For the silhouettes, New Guinea supplies two excellent candidates: frigatebirds, whose long forked tails seen against the sky compose a perfect “crest plus diamond tail” outline; and giant flying foxes, fruit bats exceeding 1.5 metres of wingspan, abundant and strictly nocturnal. For the lights, prosaic explanations crowd in — meteors, fishermen's lanterns on the reefs, fireflies, atmospheric glows — and the “ropen lights” video Paul Nation filmed in 2006 proved consistent with ordinary distant light sources. Bioluminescence in a flying vertebrate, meanwhile, is documented nowhere in nature.

No expedition has ever returned material evidence: no sharp photograph, no bone, no wing membrane. The fossil record is unambiguous — pterosaurs end 66 million years ago, with not one younger fossil. The ropen ultimately documents less an unknown fauna than the way an ideological expectation can organise ordinary sights into a coherent creature.

+ Notable reports

  1. // Near Finschhafen, New Guinea

US serviceman Duane Hodgkinson recalls watching an enormous flying animal take off. His anecdote, obscure for decades, was collected and relabelled a “pterosaur sighting” in the 2000s by creationist investigators.

  2. // Umboi Island, Papua New Guinea

Carl Baugh leads the first dedicated ropen expeditions, questioning villagers about the night lights and flying beings of their traditions; no direct sighting or physical evidence results.

  3. // Inland villages, Umboi

Jonathan Whitcomb, then David Woetzel and Garth Guessman, gather testimony they deem consistent with a long-tailed pterosaur. Woetzel reports a brief light; no one photographs an animal.

  4. // Papua New Guinea highlands

Paul Nation films two night glows he attributes to “indava” creatures; analysis of the footage finds ordinary distant light sources, consistent with lamps or fires.

+ Leading rational explanations

  • Frigatebirds: their slim, fork-tailed outline against the sky reproduces the reported “crest and diamond-tipped tail”
  • Giant flying foxes: nocturnal fruit bats over 1.5 m across, common throughout the region
  • Night lights: meteors, fishing lanterns, fireflies and atmospheric glows — no flying vertebrate is known to be bioluminescent
  • Investigation bias: testimony gathered through leading questionnaires by expeditions explicitly hunting a pterosaur

Status note

Class 4Plausible zoological explanation

Class 4: precise and sufficient zoological candidates (frigatebirds, flying foxes) account for the silhouettes, and the lights have identified prosaic causes — while no physical evidence has ever supported the pterosaur claim.

+ Frequently asked questions

Is the ropen a surviving pterosaur?
Nothing supports that: no bone, sharp photograph or wing membrane has ever been produced, and pterosaurs vanish from the fossil record 66 million years ago. Frigatebirds and large flying foxes account for the silhouettes witnesses describe.
Why is creationism part of the ropen story?
Because nearly every ropen expedition and publication comes from young-Earth investigators convinced a living pterosaur would refute evolution. That is doubly wrong: the file is empty, and a relict species would not contradict evolutionary biology anyway.
What are the “ropen lights”?
Brief nocturnal glows reported around Umboi Island and attributed by expeditions to the animal's bioluminescence. Verifiable explanations range from meteors to fishermen's lanterns, and the one analysed video proved consistent with ordinary distant lights.
