'Flying rods' caught on video worldwide turned out to be an optical artefact — motion-blurred insects, reproducible on demand.
Rods — marketed by their promoters as 'skyfish' — are elongated shapes that streak across video footage at apparent high speed, fringed with regular undulations suggesting fins or banks of wings. Invisible to the naked eye, they show up only on screen, during frame-by-frame playback. The phenomenon got its name in March 1994 from Jose Escamilla, who, while taping the sky at Midway, New Mexico, found unexplained streaks on his cassettes and became convinced he had recorded an unknown, possibly atmospheric, form of life.
The idea flourished in the late 1990s: websites, television spots, and video compilations from around the world — including striking footage from Mexico's Cave of Swallows, where giant 'skyfish' seem to dive among the swifts. Proponents described creatures of prodigious agility, moving too fast for human perception. The hypothesis had the charm of hidden worlds; it also had a structural weakness: no rod was ever seen directly, caught, or found dead.
The explanation is now demonstrated and endlessly reproducible. A standard video camera exposes each field for roughly a sixtieth of a second: an insect crossing the frame close to the lens during that interval registers as one long streak, and every wingbeat prints a regular bulge along it — hence the look of an undulating creature. The apparent size is a parallax illusion: a moth thirty centimetres from the lens, too blurred to focus, projects onto the background as a multi-metre 'flying serpent'. Anyone can manufacture a rod by filming insects in flight with a telephoto lens.
The most cited field demonstration comes from China. In 2005, after rods appeared on surveillance cameras at an industrial site in Tonghua, investigators rigged nets in the cameras' field of view and kept recording. The 'skyfish' captured on tape turned up in the nets — as moths and other entirely ordinary insects. High-shutter-speed tests, including those run for television documentaries, reach the same verdict: filmed fast enough, the rod resolves back into an insect. This makes the file one of the few in this atlas that is fully closed: a real phenomenon on screen, a nonexistent creature in the air.

- No — they are recording artefacts. An insect passing near the lens during a video field's exposure registers as an undulating streak that looks like a creature; the effect vanishes when a high shutter speed is used.
- Why does nobody ever see rods with the naked eye?
- Because they exist only in footage: the eye does not accumulate an insect's path the way a video field exposed for a sixtieth of a second does. What actually crosses the frame is a moth, a fly or a beetle.
